Spring is almost here, and that means that it’s time for spring cleaning! Your garage is a spot that always needs some serious organization when the weather gets warmer. Garages can often turn into a dumping ground for whatever does not fit in the home, limiting space for cars or space to store important items. With a little elbow grease, you can turn your garage into an orderly space where things are easily accessible.
Begin by sorting all of the items into three piles: keep, donate, and sell. Place the items from the ‘keep’ pile into categories such as hardware, sports equipment, etc. and organize them into well-marked boxes. Bring the items from the donate pile to your local Goodwill or similar charity. If you want to make a little extra money, schedule a garage sale to rid of your items you marked to sell.
After you have sorted and cleaned your garage, you can begin planning how to best utilize the space you have. Measure how much room you will need for your car and other things you will be storing. Use grid paper to mark zones for storing objects and where you plan to install shelving. Consider placing trash and recycling in an easily accessible place and storing seasonal items out of the way or in the attic.
There are many different kinds of shelving units available for storing your things. Wall racks can help items like garden tools, bikes, and other large objects stay off the floor to allow for more room. Look for organization that you can build up, such as raised shelving units and hooks on the ceiling. Slat boards with hooks will allow you to move the hooks and shelving to adjust to the items you are storing. Visit your local hardware store to find what best fits your needs.
On Wednesdays in March, we will be giving you great tips on how to make the most of your garage from best use of space to storage, as well as how to redo the floor. For more information on garage storage and organization, watch the video below:
