Spring is around the corner and that means warmer weather, grilling out and fantastic outdoor entertaining. If your concrete patio has seen better days, concrete stain could be a terrific way to update it. This staining technique allows you to add color, design and graphics to otherwise plain concrete. Because concrete is such an absorbent material, stains provide fade-resistant and permanent color.
The great news is that this project can be DIY, though there are many professionals who can assist you should you choose to go that route. Informing yourself about the process is important, and then you can decide if this is something you want to tackle on your own.
There are two types of stains to choose from:
Acid-based stains – This type of stain reacts chemically with the concrete to create a natural color variation that often appears as a mottling effect. Acid-based stains are most often used for subtle patterns with colors usually limited to earth tones such as browns, tans and greens.
Water-based stains – Available in a full spectrum of colors, this type of stain is used for more dramatic effects. Water-based stains are mixed, much like paint, to create more options.
